This is a local food that was once wildly popular in the 1920s in downtown Gongju. A slew of restaurants near Daetong Bridge (Jemincheon, Gongju) in the 1920s formed Gukbap Street and offered this dish. Although the street has disappeared and is now replaced by large, luxurious restaurants, the dish is still a beloved food in Gongju.

Created in 634 (during King Mu's reign of the Baekje Period), Gungnamji Site in Buyeo was the first artificial garden in Korea. Every summer, the place boasts blossoming lotus flowers. According to Bonchogangmok, lotus strengthens and lightens the human body and prevents diseases, helping people live long. The dish is a main food in Buddhist temples; it is believed to offer peace to the mind and restore functions of the five main organs of the human body. It is no wonder that the dish has become a healthy alternative among well-being-conscious people.
